The Most Controversial Meme
Ganked from purrsia and sageblessing

[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
I'd say I do...

[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
I'm not interested in doing meth, regardless of its legal status. I would like to be able to buy genuine Sudafed without having to add my name to a list of "potential meth lab starters," though...

[03] Abortion: for or against it?
I think it's important that it remains legal as it stands today. Taking away that choice (or necessity, in some cases) will not mean that abortions will never happen again. Instead, it will lead to a lot of women doing horrible things to themselves out of desperation.

[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
A world president, a US president, or a president of some other country? There have already been female world leaders; we're all still here. I'd be happy to support a female candidate for US president, if she were the right person for the job.

[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
This website gives you everything you need to know about the death penalty in the United States. Research has shown that the death penalty does not do what we are told it does. It is more expensive to taxpayers, not less, and it is not an effective deterrent. While I can sympathize with supporters of the death penalty- I mean, who wouldn't want to put down some of those horrible monsters that we find roaming through society from time to time?- I also have to remember that all humans are flawed, and that as a result, no justice system is 100% perfect at putting the right person behind bars. Far too many innocent people have been executed, and the purported benefit to outweigh these occasional miscarriages of justice just isn't there.

[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Yes. No one has ever died from a marijuana overdose (source). Marijuana treats a broad range of illnesses, and even eases the nausea and vomiting experienced by chemotherapy patients (source). The United States Government has been growing and dispensing medical marijuana to eligible patients for thirty years (source). It is a surprisingly useful drug! Let's not get started on how many non-violent drug offenders we'd remove from our already overcrowded jails...

[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
To each his own. Just be sure to make a decision you will be happy with, and be smart about it!

[08] Do you believe in God?
"God" defined as "Omnipotent/omniscient/omnipresent being that created the universe?" No, due to a lack of scientific proof. If scientific evidence is ever found that demonstrates the existence of such a being, I will amend my view.

[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Yes on this too! Again, to each his own. We should be happy when consenting adults find love together, regardless of their sexes. (Someone on my f-list made note of a great bumper sticker he'd come across: "When do we get to vote on your marriage?")

[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
Well, following the rules is generally a good thing, especially if you want to earn a living here. We're all living under the same government, using the same roads and governmental programs and such. If any one of us has to pay income taxes to support all that infrastructure, we all should have to. I honestly don't know much about the illegal immigration issue, though. My mom came to this country legally and is a dual citizen of the US and Iran... is it unnecessarily hard for some people to immigrate?

[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
That would be case by case, and really only the girl and her guardians could be the best judge of what to do. (echoing purrsia and sageblessing)

[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
I'm in favor of getting rid of the alcohol age entirely. I really think a lot of alcohol abuse by minors comes from its "forbidden" mystique. In my family, my parents treated alcohol like it was no big deal; my sister and I were allowed sips from alcoholic beverages since we were very young. To this day, I might have two drinks a month, tops. Honestly, I prefer Yoohoo over any alcohol I've ever tried.

[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
It should never have happened in the first place. We all know we were barking up the wrong tree to begin with (WMDs my ass). Hussein had abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with 9/11, and had until recently been getting all kinds of aid from the United States to make trouble for Iran.

It's obvious what the real motivation was. As one of my great-uncles puts it, "If Iraq had corn fields, we wouldn't have bothered." That, and Hussein was getting too big for his britches. We need to establish a puppet regime that'll be happy to give us cheap oil and a base of operations in the Middle East. Look how well it worked when we tried it in Iran! /sarcasm

Of course, our fearless leaders also completely "misunderestimated" the clusterfuck of warring peoples and conflicting ideologies that were, in modern times, smashed together into the one country we know as Iraq. The only thing holding all that together was Saddam Hussein's iron fist. Oops. Until you understand the Middle Eastern culture and way of thinking- which you obviously don't- stay the fuck out of there! So many brave people have died for no good reason at all, it's sickening.

[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
No. A person should be allowed to end his own suffering with dignity, if that's what he wants. Make sure to get a living will so that you'll have your wishes in writing!

[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
As a disciplinary measure before the child is old enough to reason, absolutely. Excessive force, no way.

[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Absolutely! Our United States Flag Code says, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." (source) I can haz ur milyunz nao pls?

[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
Obama. McCain's temper, running mate, insistence on attacking Iran, and continuing economic policies that benefit the rich at the expense of everyone else are just four of the things about him that terrify me.

[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
No. I'd be happy if others post their two cents, and I'm hoping that if I have my facts wrong on anything, others will jump in and correct me.

You've already read my rambling 50 cents worth in my LJ lol

So I'll just add that it's nice to read your thoughts on these matters. Going the extra mile with the linkages is a nice touch :)
Miusheri: MGCentermiusheri on September 28th, 2008 03:55 am (UTC)
Yes, it was likewise enjoyable to read through your and Jen's... dollar, I guess, if you add it up? ;) I think your thoughts are worth way more than that though, seriously!

Did that one fellow ever reply to your question about his leanings, and/or chastise the pseudo-intellectual moron who answered in his stead? ^_^
Purrsia Kat: forkspoonpurrsia on September 28th, 2008 04:00 am (UTC)
You are too nice!

As for that fellow, I was afraid to look after Ky came back on my LJ and basically said, her comment got unscreened and then jampiled on (she got called un-American, apparently lol) - not only by Snotty McSnootyPants, but the OP as well. They're a fun little crew over there. /sarcasm

I like it here where we can post opposing opinions or ask questions, and not go ape shit. Lovely weather here indeed.

Yup, being a good little sheep is totally the American way, amirite? =P Ah well, at least you've seen their true colors and can move on to more pleasant things.

Goddamn fucking right on number 16. Nobody knows jack about flag code these days. PROPER disposal of a US Flag is by proper folding following by incineration, generally cremation style. Except that's flag burning, oh snap.

There was a Doonesbury sunday comic a while ago... hell, probably ten years ago now... in which the majority of the comic was a huge color panel of an American flag, and at the top said

"ZONKER'S CONUNDRUM CORNER: Can you dispose of this newspaper without violating the [at the time] newly proposed flag-burning laws?

TIP: You can't throw it away, that's desecration!
TIP: It may be a newspaper, but its still a valid symbol of the nations flag, and subject to the same rules under this proposed law! That means no lining the birdcage with it!
TIP: Obviously, no using this newspaper for kindling!

The answer, of course, was, in tiny print;

"SOLUTION: Well, there is no solution! As that law stands, there is no permissable way to dispose of this flag, paper or not, that isn't a misdemeanor! You're stuck with this piece of paper forever! Don't let it fall into disrepair!"

Doonesbury has the occasional propensity to kick lots of ass.

I also love how many of the flag-wavers are guilty of actual violations of the flag code. Like putting American flags in advertisements for Memorial Day used car sales, or on 4th of July plates/napkins... I'm pretty sure those damnable flag pins aren't kosher either.
mqstout on September 29th, 2008 12:57 pm (UTC)
I thought about filling this out, but why should since you've done such an astounding job. I think the *only* thing I would change is #17: My answer would be "Neither; both need to die in the flaming pits of their Christian hell. Give us real candidates."

Sadly, we don't get much real choice when it comes to elections. I'm honestly a bit torn on whether to vote for Obama- because that's the closest thing to a vote against McCain that we can realistically get- or vote for Bob Barr, who doesn't have a snowball's chance in PA, but who better represents the kind of government I want. I've voted Libertarian in every other presidential election. Bah, stupid two-party stranglehold...

I give Obama points for putting out ads that say, "Yeah, we have problems. Here's an overview of how I would address them. Go to this website to read the plans in detail." Even if he doesn't really think the American people are thinking adults- and goodness knows many of them aren't- he seems to treat them as such. McCain's ZOMG TURRISTS OBAMA TAXES VOTE 4 REEL CHANGE! ads are just retarded. (And so is Palin.)
