Yay Genealogy
I suppose this is apropos for St. Paddy's: the origin of my clan in Ireland (my father's side of the family, obviously).

My surname's original form was Ui Lúinígh. It means, "armed with a mythical spear that the gods use to kick ass as needed." With this, I am well pleased.

I need to hunt down more about my mom's side, but as I already found out years ago, Iranian genealogy is very hard to track down in the US. I do have a list of women on my mom's side about five or six generations back- one of my great uncles wrote it up and gave it to my mom when I was born- but there's little else I have beyond that.

That's pretty farking cool. :D

Mine (in German) means "fox." Too bad my dipstick ancestors couldn't have just changed it to the English form - would've saved me a lot of grief in HS. :p

I'd change it myself, but 1) I don't know what I'd change it to, and 2) it would royally piss off my family and we have enough bad blood going around as it is (dad's side of the family is basically worthless).

What if you changed your last name to Fox? That way, you're not really "changing" it per se, just using the English version instead of the German. ^_^ "Fox" is a cool name, IMHO!

It would still piss my parents (particularly my dad) off. I can't win.

I'm not even particularly big on the English version anyway - to me, it just reminds me of possible double entendres and I had enough of the whole name bastardization as a kid. X_x

Meh, people who make fun of other people's last names can eat a bowl of dicks. These people scrape the bottom of the insult barrel. I mean, come on, you can't think of anything funnier than, "Looney! Hur hur!" (substitute your own name-butchering experiences here)? Then you are officially a moron who's not worth my valuable time and concern.

Someone who goes after something original- at least you can give him/her credit for being a clever bastard, heh!

The point is, I think, that people have been making fun of other people's names since time immemorial, and it's neither cool of them nor worth getting upset over.

I think you'll find this funny, though, and slightly on-topic!

Oh, I don't doubt that name-bastardizing has always been around. But if you've been bullied steadily for most of your life, and have a whole host of other mental issues, it's the kind of thing that leaves its mark on you one way or another.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Heh. I recognized at least one or two of the names on that list - so true.

I've been meaning, why do all your posts come up behind cuts marked "mature content" lately?
Miusheri: sleepy_minnamiusheri on March 17th, 2008 09:01 pm (UTC)
I marked my journal as appropriate for people ages 14 and up. If you're logged into LJ and have supplied your birthdate in your profile (and you're at least 14, obviously), the cuts will not display for you.

Since LJ administrators seem to have gotten Draconian lately about "inappropriate content," I decided to engage in a little CYA.
