Kitty Update II: The Wrath of UT-Health Food
The past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. First Rochester is feeling better, then he isn't, then he is.

Yesterday was pretty bad for him. He had refused to eat his easy-to-digest stuff the night before, so we had given him a few kibbles of his normal food. At 5 AM, he puked. All day long, he hid under our bed, which is very unusual for him. Our little Achilles never pines in his tent.

Our awesome vet met us at his office, even though it was closed for the holiday, so that he could give Rochester some meds and fluids. (Awesome.) When we told him the sequence of events, he told us it's possible that Rochester is allergic to his normal food- which isn't actually all that "normal." After his UTI scare a few weeks ago, that vet (different one than this vet) had given us UT-friendly food and told us to switch our cats to it. So, we had. Both cats liked it, and seemed to be okay with it. Maybe with Rochester, not so much.

So yes, Rochester hid a majority of the day yesterday. Any time we offered him food, he'd sniff at it and look away. Given that eating is this cat's favorite hobby, it was distressing to see. We bought turkey and rice to boil and feed him as a last resort. Finally, though, he ate a little of the easy-to-digest food last night. Not even a fraction of what he normally eats at night, but it was something.

This morning, however, we woke up to two wonderful things.
- No puke.
- A meowing Rochester (i.e., "Feed me!").

He dug right in to the food he had been shunning before, and ate quite a bit. He also drank from his water dish (after kicking it around a lot, as is his custom), which he hasn't done in days. He's been purry and cuddly and attention-craving. He even lets us pet his belly, despite the fact that it's bare and suture-ridden.

I'm very much hoping this positive trend continues, and that cutting out the UT food is what does the trick.

What brand of food is that easy-to-digest stuff? Gwinney has a tendency to barf a lot, even when I feed her Diamond Brand Cat Food (though not NEARLY as much as she does when I feed her store brand) and I'm sick of cleaning up cat puke all the time.

Purina EN is the one Rochester seems to prefer.

But the vet also gave us cans of Hills i/d. Pretty much the same thing, but almost every time we've put it in front of Rochester, he has gagged. ^_^* We're hoping that trend might end now that he seems to have recovered his appetite...

Basically, our vet is trying to keep him away from anything too fatty. That's why he also recommended that, if Rochester refused both of the above, we could get some extra-lean ground turkey, boil it, and mix in some white rice.

I hope one of the above might be agreeable to Gwinney!

Sounds to me like someone is on the road to recovery! Yay!! I hope it IS just the different food because that is an easy fix. :) Give him a snuggle and a kiss for me!!!

*HUGS* YAY to feeling better!!

Will do! And yeah, I really hope the positive trend continues! *hugs*

Well I will definitely call you for my nightly update while I'm stuck in traffic trying to get home. :) Have any plans for the evening? Hmm, maybe I won't get stuck in traffic...I think I'm the only person trying to get out of Pittsburgh this evening while everyone else is trying to get in, LOL :)

No plans, really. We'll probably be able to hear the fireworks downtown, though not as loudly as we could in Albany, when we were just a few blocks down from the fireworks site. Sephie would always freak and hide when they started, heh.

Yeah, I imagine it won't be too bad outbound! So many people on vacation today... in fact, I'm getting an unintentional vacation right now. I haven't been able to log into work since about 10:00-ish. No one working from home can. IT screwed up the remote client DB, hooray! I have to wait until they fix it before I can go back to work!

Well that sounds like fun! I'm not really sentimental about New Years Eve...I mean, this isn't the first (or last) time I've seen balls drop (LOL), so I'm not one of those people that looks at tonight as as excuse to party. Hanging in the warm house with my kitties while making Veal Parmesean (picked up the ingredients last night, salivating ever since!) is sufficient celebration for me.

And DUDE!!! It would be awesome if they don't get this situation fixed at all today...Then you won't have to GBTW at all! Two days worth of vaca for the price of one! Wooooo!!! ;)

They had me log in with one of the IT lady's credentials, which worked for a little while... but then, Notes crashed, as it is wont to do. I can't restart Notes without rebooting the machine, and if I reboot the machine, I get booted out of my work login, and need someone to give me credentials again to get back in. And the IT lady isn't answering her phone. Wee! A lot of people are getting shut out of the network today, it's kinda funny.

Aw, poor kitty. Glad he's feeling better though!

Many thanks! *hugs* He's feeling even better today, back to his old attention-whoring-poop-machine self ;)
