Interests and Icons
Courtesy of purrsia: Comment and I will ask you to explain three interests from your LJ profile, and three of your user icons.

Farsi The official language of Iran. My mom grew up in Iran and thus speaks fluently, but she didn't teach me or my sister very much of it growing up. Various attempts at various points usually petered out unsuccessfully, for whatever reason. The alphabet has always stuck with me, so at least there's that, and aside from customary greetings/farewells and the like, I've always known enough that I could listen in on a conversation and give you at least a rough idea of what's being discussed. Lately, I've been trying to buckle down and be more serious about learning Farsi. Since I don't live at home anymore, I miss hearing the language, and I'd like to get good enough to be able to hold my own in a conversation, particularly since both Remy and I would like to go to Iran one day. I have a Farsi grammar/vocabulary book that I study during my lunch break and on weekends. I picked up enough that I was able to write my mom a thank-you note after she let me and Remy make use of her house for a weekend.

Because I love you, Purrs, here's your real-life first name in Farsi. Enjoy! =)

Anyone else who wants me to do one for them, feel free to pester me. But be mindful that I actually need to do some work today too, at some point... ;)

Freethinker The definition from the FFRF webpage: "A person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established belief. Freethinkers include atheists, agnostics and rationalists. No one can be a freethinker who demands conformity to a bible, creed, or messiah. To the freethinker, revelation and faith are invalid, and orthodoxy is no guarantee of truth." Pretty much sums it up. I'm a naturalist and a materialist (in the philosophical sense- i.e., all that "is" is what we can observe in the material world and uncover with scientific methods. Ghosts, souls, spirits, etc. need not apply).

James Randi A magician who is best known for debunking "paranormal" con-artists like Uri Geller. He runs the James Randi Educational Foundation, and sponsors a $1 million dollar prize available to anyone who can demonstrate a paranormal ability- any paranormal ability- in a controlled environment. Unsurprisingly, no psychics, astrologers, dowsers, remote viewers, etc. have ever even come close to winning. The "Amazing" Randi is an advocate for scientific and critical thinking, and works to fight the "woowoos" and conmen who are out to exploit people for their own gain. Sylvia Browne? John Edward, Mr. Biggest Douche in the Universe? I'm looking at you.

This is an animated rendition of Patrick Troughton, the second actor to play the Doctor in Doctor Who. Why animated? Well, the BBC lost the film for a couple of episodes; I elaborated on this in an earlier post. Anyway, of the ten actors to play the Doctor in the show's forty year run, Patrick Troughton is my favorite: serious one second, delightfully quirky the next. I would kill to be this Doctor's companion, or at least to have a man like this as a doting uncle. ;) I have heard that he was not terribly popular during his run because the actor who preceded him played the Doctor as a cranky, cantankerous old bastard, and people were used to that, and not the lighthearted demeanor. But Troughton paved the way for some of the most popular Doctors to follow, like Tom Baker (the most popular Doctor to American audiences), and also for the current Doctor, David Tennant.

I also use this icon for one of my Star Trek role-play characters, a Romulan doctor named Goren. Goren is an eccentric who openly flaunts the strict conformity of more conventional Romulans, to the extent that many consider him batshit crazy. In reality, he's a lot like Troughton: quirky. He takes his job extremely seriously, and has, on a few occasions, almost been executed for trying to strong-arm superior officers into needed treatment. Someone introduced him to Doctor Who at one point, and now he enjoys recreating the series in the holodeck. Yes, my role-play characters role-play too! It's some crazy nerd recursion, lemme tell you.

The symbol of The Brights, a naturalist group trying to promote a terminology for the philosophy that isn't simply the negation of someone else's philosophy. Instead of calling themselves non-religious, a-theist, etc., they want to create popular acceptance for a new term: bright. And no, the opposite of "bright" is not "not-bright," heh! It's "super." ;) I registered with them 'cause I thought it was a neat idea.

This is another Star Trek role-play character (I have at least ten kajillion of them), Lieutenant Commander Nazeh Rahimi. I drew/'Shopped the icon. She's a computer-savvy Iranian, and despite being fairly young (in her mid-twenties), she's the Chief of Science on her vessel. One of her best "friends" is a PADD (personal hand-held computer) she has lovingly dubbed Alef. She's generally enthusiastic and eager to help out, and has a strong take-no-shit attitude- so strong that it occasionally lands her in hot water with superiors. She will voice an objection to orders if she doesn't think they make sense. She also has a streak for mischief, but that has been tempered quite a bit since becoming a senior officer. Not long ago, she married fellow officer and long-time friend Mayat Fenn, a Bolian. Why yes, the details and depth of my characters' personal lives quite often exceeds that of my own.

I think that's it for now! Happy Birthday to Remy! =)

I want to play!

ancient civilizations (specifically, which ones?)
falsifying statistics
spork room

I also did your name/nickname in Farsi, 'cause there was a lot to "play" in this particular post ;) Yours unfortunately is a little tricky: there is no "th" in Farsi, nor is there an "i" sound like the one you hear in "bit" or "gig." So, the first one is Katherine, but is written as "Katren." The second one is Kit, it is written as "Keet." =)

Ooo, pretty! If I ever invent a language, I hope to make it pretty. :) I put up my answers over on my journal.
Angeldeathslilsister on April 27th, 2007 10:38 pm (UTC)
oo! I wanna play too.

And I heart animated Patrick Troughton. :) I need to find me an animated Jamie icon.

Okay! Here are yours:

caitlin r. kiernan
geddy lee
dream theater

I'm not at work anymore, but I can show your name in Farsi on Monday ;)

Oh, and I can make you a Jamie icon! VLC lets me take screen captures of DVDs. What expression are you aiming for? Happy? Concerned? About to kick someone's ass? ^_^

Jamie and Zoe rule... just had to throw that in there ;)
Angel: ten tiedeathslilsister on April 28th, 2007 03:22 am (UTC)
Jamie and Zoe do rule, they're some of my favorite companions. Doctor Who was a lot better when it wasn't all mushy and emo. Any Jamie will do, so long as he's looking like his cute Jamie self. :)

Okie, on to the questions:

Caitlin R. Keirnan is a horror writer that I used to be reallyreally into, thanks to an ex of mine, and I read her blog for a long while, until I realized that it was mostly full of whining about how omgveryhaaaaarrrrrrd it is to be a paid professional writer, you know, getting to wake up and do what you love every day. Her book "Silk" is a decent read, though.

Geddy Lee is the lead singer for Rush...and I love him. I have a soft spot for male rock singers that can hit higher notes than I can. I saw them live a few years ago (and I'm planning on seeing them again in June, wooo!), and you would -almost- swear the man can play keyboards and bass at the same time.

Dream Theater are another prog-rock band, heavily influenced by Rush, incidentally. The cool thing about them is that they're all amazing musicians-- the lead singer is opera-trained, the keyboard player was (I think) a classical musician at one point, so they don't just go off on prog jams, it's like...little symphonies.

The first icon is Bette Davis looking oh-so cool. I love her. You MUST see "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?". She's well past her prime in that one (See "All About Eve" for some Bette awesomeness), but still fantastic.

The second icon is a dress I found at www.dressaday.com, I think it's by Luly Yang. I can find the full size for you if you like, it's gorgeous.

The last icon is a still from the movie "Secretary", which is a great film. I won't spoil what it's about (*wink*) but this still is actually from a pretty upbeat part of the movie, oddly enough.

Whew, that was a lot of typing. I think maybe I'll tag you back soon. :)

Doctor Who was a lot better when it wasn't all mushy and emo.

Hear, hear! I haven't watched any this series since "Runaway Bride," and I doubt I'm missing out on much.

I will have to hunt down Bette Davis and Dream Theater- Remy says I would like the latter =)

Here's what I managed with Jamie in about two seconds of effort, heh- I can try for more later. We're just about to run out the door to pick up our new glasses, yay!

Feel free to tag back! =D

Okie-doke! Here are yours, Cheryl dear:

keller williams
remus lupin

skyibesky on April 29th, 2007 08:44 pm (UTC)

Keller williams: my favorite one-man jamband (dead serious). it's him, his guitars/basses, and a loop machine. The end result = much fun.

remus! I'm a harry potter dork, and lupin is one of my favorite characters EVAR....and dude....werewolves. He and Snape fight like they're married, I find it amusing.

Zeromancer: industrial/gothy tunes i actually like (yes, i will not be screaming "what is this shit" when i hear em"). Funny, cause I picked up Zzyzx as a joke to tell a friend who's intarweb nick (everywhere) is Zzyzx, just to tell him that he's got an album named after him. Well, the tunes are good. Unfortunately, mp3's went *poof* when I lost the HD in skylab, so i'm hoping to actually have a cd fund soon. Gah!

My foot: I went to visit my friend Aaron in IL in '04, and we got photo happy. Hence the random foot shot.

My shadow: Same as above, but I'm wearing pants. Most people, including myself, get confused when I wear pants, so I thought this was a funny icon.

and my favorite......MIKE GORDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's my bass-playing weird-thing-saying hero. This is a screenshot from when Phish was on the Simpsons. Odd Cheryl fact: every show I saw in 2006 contained MG in some way, shape, or form. Of course, I only went to ~5 shows, so it isn't too stalker like, right? I mean, it isn't.....right?!?!?! Hehehehehe. Mike's my hero, I want his musically inclined babies. No sex, just guaranteed entertainment for when i get old and cranky. :)

Okay! Here we go!

calle 13

Dang- looking at your list, I see a lot I could add to mine, like FSM and YTMND ;D

sageblessing on April 29th, 2007 06:18 pm (UTC)
Calle 13... is a couple of Puerto Rican half-brothers who perform what I guess could best be described as Latin Alt Rock / Reggaeton... Maybe even Alt Reggaeton? One of the brothers lived on an actual Calle 13, I think in San Juan. And he's called Residente Calle 13, while his bro is, of course, Visitante Calle 13. They are fantastic musicians, absolutely hilarious, and at times politically provocative. (Residente is pretty hot, too...) I got hooked on them after seeing their videos (and others of collaborations that Residente did with other Puerto Rican artists like Julio Voltio) on MTV Tr3s (which I used to watch obsessively up until when I recently had my cable turned off...)

Robi Draco Rosa is another Puerto Rican musician I got hooked onto thanks to MTV Tr3s. (Oh, and in case you couldn't tell, yes, I am bilingual.) Draco is a fucking god. I LOVE him. He started out in Menudo of all groups, quit that scene after the management said he couldn't write songs for the group to sing, then went off to Brazil to study with some major, major Latin singers (Ruben Blades, Juan Luis Guerra, some others...) After that, he was in a rock-funk-fusion band called Maggie's Dream, which, rumor has it, folded after one of the members died. Then, he went on to a wild solo career, which has spawned some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. He composed a lot of Ricky Martin's bigger hits, like "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "She Bangs", but those songs don't sound anything like his solo work at all. Oh -- and if you actually remember the movie "Salsa", he was the male lead, and right after the movie was made, he married the female lead, Angela Alvarado, who's incredible as well. But anyway, Draco has a website, Phantom*Vox, where you can see/hear/read about all the amazing stuff he does, but also read news stories, hear music and see art from others he strongly admires, etc. It's cool to find an artist who doesn't want his website to be all "me, me, me, buy my stuff, worship me, blah blah blah". He wants to not just go on about himself and his works, but also give us a glimpse of everything that he feels inspired by. ...Did I mention yet how much I love this guy? ;)

Santino Rice was one of the designers from "Project Runway", season 2. He actually made it to the very end of the competition but didn't win... I still think he should have, because he's a far superior designer to the other two who were up against him. Not to mention that he composed and recorded his own song for the final bit of the competition when the models donned his work and strutted down the catwalk at Olympus Fashion Week. I adore Santino cuz he's funny as hell and incredibly talented, but also keeps it real. It also doesn't hurt that, when everyone was going on about how all the men, except for one who made it known that he's straight, were supposedly gay on that season, he later told the world in a gay mag later that he's actually bi. Yay!!! (Yes, I'm also bi, in case you're wondering.)

Now, the pics...
The first one, I made during the midst of last year's Voltron Fandom Awards. A fight broke out on the chat group associated with the awards, and I got myself into the mix, which was not the world's best idea. But the end result was joking about how the fandom is "serious business"... I got the idea to make the icon after seeing the "LOL,..." fad on ytmnd, which was a spin on a fark.com thing where people kept saying something like "LOL, it's the Internet, arguments don't matter", which in turn got shortened down to just "LOL, Internet". That in turn got morphed into a whole bunch of "LOL, [whatever you want]". The Fandom Award b.s. just seemed to cry out for someone to say "LOL, Fandom"...

The second is a pic of the aforementioned Draco Rosa. Just a fucking cool pic of him.

The third is a doll I made over at the Gaia Dream Avatar Creator. Just supposed to be me wearing my favorite color, steel-toe Doc Marten oxfords (I actually own a similar pair of shoes), falcon wings, a phoenix crown (I want to get a tattoo of a phoenix at some point), and a shining diamond necklace. Just for the hell of it :)
